EVERY PLANT HAS ITS MOMENT

When to plant Butterhead lettuce?

The right month changes from one garden to another. Let’s find the season for your little green corner, starting with the climate and how you want to begin.

Lactuca sativa Capitata Group

Weather for growing

5–23 °C

Indicative average air temperatures, rather than soil temperatures.

To help seeds sprout

15.6–23.9 °C

The warmth of the soil matters: check your seed packet too.

Time to harvest

55–85 days

Counted from sowing.

Sunlight

Sun or partial shade

Sun for part of the day is fine too.

Water

Regular

Keep the soil moist, without soaking it.

Growing advice

Leave room for the head to form and water without constantly wetting its centre.

Days to a full head are estimates: variety, heat and season can change timing and encourage bolting.

A SEASON TO BEGIN

A calendar for your garden.

Choose your location above to see the usually more favourable periods, with sowing and transplanting shown separately.

How to read the calendar

This is an estimate from historical climate, rather than a forecast for this year or a calendar for your variety. We compare three starting dates per month (5, 15 and 25) with cold and time to grow. A favourable month doesn’t guarantee that every day will be suitable. To decide about today, check the weather forecast too.

Air temperature records don’t measure the soil: check its warmth before sowing or planting. Indoor sowing assumes around 22 °C and plenty of light; we consider the climate at the later transplanting time. For perennials, garlic and artichokes we only assess establishment. Variety, chilling requirements, day length and local conditions need separate checks.

ADVICE WITH ROOTS

Nature doesn’t follow
the same calendar everywhere.

Your location helps us work out when to start.
Three things matter more than the month on the calendar.

01

The right place

Location and local climate: a mountain garden has a different rhythm from a seaside balcony.

02

The right moment

The coming days’ temperatures help us consider sprouting, cold and heat.

03

Time to grow

Recent climate records help us consider the time until harvest, or while a plant settles in.
